Work experience at Education Bradford takes an exciting turn!

by Rebecca Pullan

Before I came on my work experience at Education Bradford I thought it would be boring, filled with paper work and stuff like that.  However, I’m now really glad I came as it was much more fun than I had imagined!

On the second day I went to BASF, a chemical plant in Bradford, to help with some filming! I went with Sally and Joe who work for EdCreates. At first I just watched them film some stock footage - footage that doesn’t have any audio and could be used for various things such as an introduction to a film. We were outside, it was quite early in the morning and it was freezing!  However it was still fun! I’m interested in video editing so watching them was an interesting experience as I hadn’t seen people filming before.

Luckily we weren’t outside for long and were able to move inside fairly quickly. Sally and Joe had to go outside again because they had more footage to shoot but I got to stay inside because there wasn’t a lot of space on the roof, which is where they where filming.

Then we went down into the children’s lab which unsurprisingly looked slightly like my school lab. This time they were filming interviews with scientists. The project that they were getting extra footage for was for a film made by children about their views on science and scientists. They had already spoken to these children at a previous date and needless to say, most of the children thought all scientists looked like Einstein!

When they were filming interviews with the scientists I got to wear a very fetching pair of headphones because I was the ‘Sound Operator.’ In normal terms that means I had to listen to the audio through the headphones and make sure that there were no odd noises. I also had to check the audio levels and make sure that it wasn’t too loud. That was really good because I had never done anything like that. We then filmed some experiments and I did the same thing with the sound.  We had been there about two hours by the time we left and I must say it had been an incredibly interesting two hours!

When we got back to Education Bradford I got to sit with Sally and watch her do some editing on a different project for an hour. I did have some experience with editing as it’s a hobby of mine although Sally was using a different program. I asked her about how she got into the job and found out that she was on an internship with EdCreates which was interesting and something I might consider in the future. She also said that I would have better job possibilities if I could film as well as video edit. I was a bit unsure when she said this but I quickly came round to the idea because I had had such a fun time on the shoot!

People have an idea that filming is very glamorous and done on Hollywood film sets but there wasn’t much glamour on this shoot. It was a very down to earth experience which made me realise that filming/editing is a realistic dream that I don’t have to move to Hollywood to achieve.
