Excitement has started to grow as Year 5 pupils from 7 Bradford primary schools compete in a project where they will design and build Lego Superheros. This is part of a programme called "Language for Learning" funded by Bradford Council.
Our reporters interviewed some students from year 5 in Cottingley Primary about their favourite superheros and what they thought of their first session with the team from the Bradford Education Business Partnership. The replies were all positive because they had found the morning session fun ,exciting and enjoyable. A young girl said ‘The morning session was great because there were lots of fun activities and different scenes for us to act in about Batman and other characters’.
The students had to create and develop a new Superhero, using Lego as the construction medium. They also had to generate ideas and extend creative thinking skills through Drama about the traditional roles and powers of Superheros. They will extend their language use and vocabulary through role play. Each participating group of students across the 7 schools will create a series of Superheros and associated storylines.
Our reporter interviewed some pupils about 'what powers will your superhero have' and 'have you come up with an idea for your own superhero'. One boy replied "My superhero will be a normal person until one day he gets stabbed with an rusty old knife and has an allergic reaction. He has become metallic and has metallic blades coming out of his arms. Also he can shoot laser out of his eyes and he can fly and become camouflaged. I haven't really thought about a name yet."
The subject matter of the adventures will provide an educational message linked to the curriculum, for example: environmental, health message or anti-crime messages.
All the students had enjoyed themselves and came up with brilliant ideas for their Superheros. We look forward to hearing from the other schools in the competition about their ideas and designs for Lego Superheros.
