The year 5 and 6 students of Burley Oaks Primary invite us in to have a look at their new film and book production!

By Qainaat Aftab

On the 4th July 2011, year 5 and 6 students from Burley Oaks Primary in Burley in Wharfedale, West Yorkshire  took part in the final stage of a film and book production. The project was about Téréli which is a village in the Dogon region of Mali, West Africa. The village was first linked with Burley in Wharfedale, a village in West Yorkshire, through the ‘On the Line’ project which was the brainchild of Jon Snow.

The project's purpose was to educate the minds of young children about Téréli and understand the culture of the village.

The Téréli Friendship Trust were a major part of this project. The Trust built on work done in 1989 by the school as a Recycling Project. As well as being of great environmental value the money raised was given to many charities. Over 10 years donations were given to help their work in many countries including well digging projects in the Dogon region of Mali.

In 1996 a young man called Zakari Saye wrote a letter to Christian Aid saying that he had seen the wells and that he wanted to become partners. Zakari also mentioned the difficulties that were happening in Téréli.
Then in 1998 a journalist called Jon Snow who works on the channel 4 news set up a project called 'On The Line.' This is a simple idea which seeks to inspire all who live along the Meridian Line to discover more about the lives, countries and environments of their ‘neighbours’ on the line. The project aims to encourage people to explore their attitudes, beliefs and behaviour towards others living in countries along the Meridian Line and to consider their responsibility to one another and the planet we all share.
Various charities got involved in this project, and the people of Burley were inspired to link with Zakari’s village Téréli.

All children who took part in producing the film and the books project benefited as they were educated about the culture and place of Tereli and the majority of the pupils found it 'Good!' and had 'Learnt alot from Téréli'. Ellena a year 5 pupil at Burley Oaks Primary commented that 'We're very lucky and really fortunate to be learning about the people in Téréli ' and that 'We have lots of things that they don't have'.Another year 5 pupil Ben found the project 'Quite different from normal lessons'

Mary and Janet who are representatives of the Trust talked to Ed news about their links with the village in Mali. Mary commented that 'We all did it together, and when we do it togther we can acheive alot more'. She also made it clear that the people of Tereli did 'Most of the hard part'. Mary also commented that the 'Friendship Link' made a lot of the local people get involved which has made a big difference to facilities such as the medical room for pregnant women.
